One of the most common questions I receive as a Northern Virginia maternity photographer is:

“When is the best time to take maternity photos?”

The short answer? Most maternity sessions are photographed between 28 and 34 weeks pregnant.

This window tends to be the sweet spot because your baby bump is beautifully visible, but you’re often still comfortable enough to enjoy the experience.

Of course, every pregnancy is different, so let’s break down exactly when you should schedule your maternity session.

When should you book a maternity session

The Ideal Time for Maternity Photos

For most expectant mothers, I recommend scheduling your maternity session between 28 and 34 weeks.

During this stage of pregnancy:

  • Your bump is beautifully round and prominent
  • Swelling is often still minimal
  • You’re typically more comfortable moving and posing
  • There is less risk of baby arriving before your session date
  • You’ll have more energy compared to the final weeks of pregnancy

This timeframe provides the perfect balance between showcasing your pregnancy and ensuring you’re comfortable throughout the session.

What If You’re Expecting Twins?

If you’re carrying twins or multiples, you’ll likely want to schedule your session a little earlier.

Many twin mothers choose to photograph their maternity session between 24 and 30 weeks.

Because twin pregnancies often progress more quickly and babies sometimes arrive earlier, planning ahead is especially important.

Is It Ever Too Early?

One of the biggest mistakes I see is waiting until the last minute to schedule.

Many photographers book maternity sessions several weeks—or even months—in advance, particularly during busy seasons like spring and fall.

I recommend reaching out sometime during your second trimester to secure your preferred date.

Booking early also gives you plenty of time to:

  • Plan your wardrobe
  • Browse gown options
  • Decide between a studio or outdoor session
  • Coordinate schedules with your partner or children

Is It Ever Too Late?

Not necessarily.

I’ve photographed beautiful maternity sessions at 35, 36, and even 37 weeks.

However, as your due date approaches, a few challenges can arise:

  • Increased swelling
  • Fatigue
  • Difficulty standing for extended periods
  • Greater chance of baby arriving before your session

If you’re already past 34 weeks and considering maternity photos, don’t panic. Reach out as soon as possible and we’ll determine the best option based on your timeline.

Studio vs. Outdoor Maternity Sessions

The timing recommendation remains similar whether you choose a studio or outdoor session.

However, many mothers who are further along in pregnancy appreciate the comfort of a studio environment.

Studio maternity sessions provide:

  • Climate-controlled comfort
  • Easy outfit changes
  • Access to the client closet
  • Flexible scheduling regardless of weather

Outdoor sessions offer gorgeous natural scenery and sunset light, making them a wonderful choice for families who love a more organic look.

What Should You Wear?

Choosing the right outfit can make a huge difference in how your maternity portraits feel.

Flowing gowns, fitted dresses, and soft neutral tones tend to photograph beautifully because they highlight your growing bump while creating a timeless look.

At Blue Sugar Photography, maternity clients have access to a curated client closet featuring over 100 designer gowns, helping remove the stress of finding the perfect outfit.

Don’t Forget to Include Your Family

Your maternity session doesn’t have to be just about the bump.

Many of my clients choose to include:

  • Partners
  • Spouses
  • Older children
  • Siblings
  • Family pets

These images often become some of the most treasured photographs from the entire session because they capture the anticipation and excitement surrounding your growing family.

Schedule Your Maternity Session Early

If you’re currently in your second trimester, now is the perfect time to begin planning.

The ideal maternity session takes place between 28 and 34 weeks, but every pregnancy is unique. The most important thing is choosing a timeframe that allows you to feel comfortable, confident, and excited to celebrate this incredible season of life.

If you’re looking for maternity photography in Loudoun County, Northern Virginia, Maryland, Washington DC, or the surrounding DMV area, I’d love to help you create beautiful images you’ll treasure for years to come.
