Loudoun Maternity Photographer, Lavelle House, pops on to answer a big question from first time moms. So, I see this question asked often on Facebook and it’s a good one… what do you really need to pack in your hospital bag? As a mom of 5, I can say I asked the same question when preparing for our first baby’s arrival 13 years ago. I thought you needed to bring EVERYTHING, like a rolling suitcase full of baby and mama related products that could last a week!

You may think the same thing I did but in reality, you need very little for your hospital stay; at least in the USA. A small overnight bag and some necessities are all that are required. The hospital will provide a lot, including: diapers, wipes, receiving blankets, lanolin, ice packs, pads, aspirator, baby hats, etc.
So all that’s left to add to your bag are a few items, including: chapstick, brush, toothbrush, toothpaste, hair ties, deodorant, slippers/flip flops for walking around, going home outfits for mom and baby, comfy PJs easy for nursing in, nursing pillow and something to keep you busy such as a book or laptop and laptop charger.
While you’re packing your hospital bag, be sure to send your photographer a note to book your maternity photo session!
All in all, the hospital bag should not be something an expectant mama frets over. Keep it simple, pack light and be sure to grab the extras to take home from the hospital. Your hospital stay is also a great time to write out thank you cards for baby shower gifts and contact your photographer to let them know baby has arrived. That will give plenty of notice to finalize your newborn photo session date.
