Styling your Maternity Photo Session

The Client Closet
During your styling consultation, you can browse our extensive client closet and try on any of the gowns and outfits you’d like. Blue Sugar Photography stocks gowns in an array of colors and sizes to suit every mama. Our favorite gown vendor is Sew Trendy Accessories. Once you have decided on 2-3 gowns, we’ll discuss location options to go along with your selections and ensure we capture everything you want.
When thinking about locations for your maternity photo session, we’ll want to take into consideration what colors and landscapes you’re going for; whether it be urban/downtown, gardens or fields and creeks, we will find the perfect spot! Often times, the best location ends up being somewhere you never would have though would work, such as the above photo taken inside an umbrella of trees where we found a lush garden just waiting for us hidden from plain sight!
We’ll discuss how to coordinate family members outfits during our styling consultation as well as accessories. Accessories add personal flair to the outfits and bring out colors amazingly well! Blue Sugar Photography’s closet includes several flower crowns, belts and necklaces to add to your outfits but don’t be afraid to include your own items. For most of our gowns, your shoe selection won’t matter much as your feet won’t be visible unless you’re opting for a cocktail dress.
Session Timing
The last item on our list to decide on during your maternity styling consultation will be the time of your session. Timing will affect the look of your photos and the majority of our sessions will take place mid morning; around 9:00 or 10:00am or late evening — 5:30-7:00pm. Sunset sessions are always the best as we’ll get daylight and gorgeous hazy skies.
